AI Visibility (GEO/AEO)

What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) structures content so engines extract your passage and show it as the answer. What it is, how it differs from SEO and GEO, and the moves that win.

What is answer engine optimization: extraction into featured snippets, voice and AI answers

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that search and AI engines extract a passage from your page and display it directly as the answer — a featured snippet, a People Also Ask entry, a voice-assistant reply, or a line inside an AI Overview. Where SEO competes for a ranked link a person clicks, AEO competes to be the answer shown before any click happens. This guide explains what AEO is, how it differs from SEO and GEO, and the concrete moves that win extraction.

Key takeaway

  • AEO targets extraction: an engine lifting one passage from your page and showing it verbatim as the answer.
  • You win by being concise, directly responsive, and formatted to match whatever the engine currently displays for that query.
  • The best AEO opportunities are queries where you already rank positions 2 to 10 but a competitor holds the snippet — eligibility is proven, only extractability is missing.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is optimising your content so that answer engines — Google’s featured snippets and People Also Ask, voice assistants like Siri and Alexa, and the answer layers inside AI search — extract a passage from your page and present it as the direct response to a query. The unit that competes is not the page but the passage. An engine reads a question, finds the cleanest self-contained answer across the pages it trusts, and displays that one passage.

The name captures the shift. Search engines return a list of options. Answer engines return an answer. AEO is optimising to be the answer they return, which is a different job from optimising to appear in the list.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO

The three terms are cousins, and confusing them leads to the wrong work. SEO optimises a page to rank in a list of links. AEO optimises a passage to be extracted and displayed verbatim. GEO — generative engine optimization — optimises content to be retrieved, synthesised and cited inside an answer an AI writes from multiple sources.

The clean mental model is by what the engine does. SEO: it lists your page. AEO: it lifts a passage and shows it. GEO: it blends your passage into a generated answer and attributes you. AEO and GEO both operate at the passage level and share most of their structural moves; the difference is that AEO shows your words directly while GEO rewrites and synthesises them.

In practice you rarely choose. A page built for extraction usually serves all three, because the same answer-first, self-contained structure that wins a featured snippet also feeds an AI citation and sits on a well-ranked page.

~16%

Share of Google searches now showing AI Overviews, on top of the featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes that already dominate informational results. On a rising share of queries, the answer shown above the links is the whole game.

Why AEO matters more every year

The zero-click search — where the user gets their answer without clicking any result — used to be an edge case. It’s now the default for a large and growing share of informational and high-intent queries. Featured snippets, People Also Ask, knowledge panels and AI Overviews all answer the question on the results page itself.

For a business, that changes what visibility means. Ranking first for a query whose answer Google displays at the top no longer guarantees the traffic it once did. Being the passage Google shows in that answer becomes the way you stay visible — your brand appears, your answer is the one read, and the clicks that do happen tend to go to the cited source. AEO is how you stay present on a results page that increasingly answers itself.

Voice search compounds this. When someone asks a smart speaker a question, there is no list of ten links to read aloud. The assistant reads one answer, and that answer is almost always an extracted passage. If you’re not the extracted passage, you don’t exist in voice.

The core AEO moves

  • Direct-answer blocks. Place a 40-to-60-word complete answer immediately beneath each question heading. Not a preamble to the answer — the answer itself, stated outright, with the depth following below. This block is what the engine extracts, so it has to stand entirely on its own.
  • Match the snippet format. Look at what currently holds the featured snippet for your target query. If it’s a paragraph, write a paragraph. If it’s a numbered list, write a numbered list. If it’s a table, build a table. The engine is looking for a specific shape to slot into its display, and a format mismatch loses a winnable snippet even when your answer is better.
  • Use the definitional pattern for “what is” queries. Lead with the canonical shape: “[Term] is [concise definition].” That exact structure is what engines extract as the dictionary answer for definitional searches.
  • Build a real FAQ block. A section of three to six genuine questions from People Also Ask, each answered in a self-contained 40-to-60-word paragraph, feeds PAA, voice and AI citation from one piece of work. It’s the highest-yield single element in AEO.
  • Add matching schema. FAQPage and HowTo structured data help engines identify and trust your answer passages — but the markup must match what’s visibly on the page. Schema for content that isn’t there is a trust violation, not a shortcut.

Where the fastest wins are

The highest-return AEO targets are queries where you already rank positions 2 to 10 but a competitor holds the snippet. Your eligibility is proven — Google already trusts your page enough to rank it — so the only thing missing is extractability. Rewriting that page’s relevant passage into a clean, format-matched, direct answer can capture the snippet without any new ranking work.

Find these in Google Search Console: look for pages ranking in the top ten for question-shaped queries, then check which of those queries show a featured snippet you don’t own. That list is your AEO priority queue, ordered by how close you already are.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No. SEO optimises a page to rank in a list of links a person browses and clicks. AEO optimises a passage to be extracted and displayed directly as the answer — in a featured snippet, People Also Ask, voice reply or AI Overview. SEO competes at the page level for a position; AEO competes at the passage level to be the shown answer. They share a foundation but reward different final moves.

How is AEO different from GEO?

AEO targets extraction — an engine displaying one of your passages verbatim. GEO targets synthesis — an AI engine reading several sources, writing an original answer, and citing yours among them. AEO shows your exact words; GEO blends and rewrites them. Both work at the passage level and share most structural moves, so a well-built page usually serves both at once.

Does AEO reduce my website traffic?

It can, on queries where the extracted answer satisfies the searcher without a click. But not being the extracted answer doesn’t win those clicks back — it just removes your brand from the results entirely. AEO keeps you visible in the answer, captures the clicks that do happen to cited sources, and preserves presence on voice, where there’s no link list at all.

What’s the single most effective AEO move?

Adding a direct-answer block — a complete 40-to-60-word answer immediately under each question heading, formatted to match whatever the engine currently displays for that query. It’s the passage that gets extracted. Pair it with a real FAQ block answering People Also Ask questions, and you cover snippets, voice and AI citation from one piece of work.

The bottom line

Answer engine optimization is optimising to be the answer, not just a link to it. As results pages increasingly answer questions themselves, being the extracted passage is how you stay visible. Start where you already rank 2 to 10 without owning the snippet, rewrite those passages as format-matched direct answers, and add a genuine FAQ block. That’s the shortest path from ranking to being the answer.
